About Won-a-day!

Update February, 2011:

2010 has come and gone, it was a busy year of discovery, a little mid-life crisis, some adjustments to my direction, all in all a very good, though stressful year.

My momentum is ongoing, projects keep happening and serendipity always seems to be on my side as I find what I need when I need it and seldom find what I think I want.  The great mystery continues…what a life indeed! Peace, Love and Joy my friends :)

2009 was an amazing year of action.  Every January I reflect, renew, and revise my focus.  This year I have no promises for my online writing, but when the spirit moves me I will write here.  When the spirit moves me I will work on “The Book”, and when the spirit moves me I will answer the call to action.

And as many of you know…the spirit is always whispering in my ear…I have no doubt that this will be a busy and wondrous year!

UPDATE: – Jan 1, 2009

Wow it was 3 years ago that writing about a wonder every day was my goal for the year…I will never forget the feeling I had on December 31 of 2006 when I had written more than 365 entries in the year.  More importantly I will never forget all the wonderful feedback I received and one comment that privately thanked me for providing support that helped them hang on during a difficult time.

In January of 2007 I began my “Kindness Rocks” project that ended up becoming part of the Pay it forward Comox Valley project at my work.  Now that’s a story of serendipity!  I had so many hopes for that project that I let won-a-day go except for sporadic posting.

In March of 2007 I decided to move to weekly post and was off to a good start until the day the phone rang.  The phone rang to tell me that my father had been admitted to the hospital and they didn’t know if he would make it.  Off to the east coast surrounded by family and the gift of many precious moments with my Dad.  That trip began almost a year of sitting on the edge of my seat wondering is today the day.  I didn’t write for most of the time leading up to my next trip to be by Dad’s side late in November of 2007.  I spent more precious days at his bedside then headed back to the west coast for Christmas with my husband and son.

15 Days later the dreaded phone call, it came  just minutes before midnight on Christmas Day telling me my beloved Dad had died.  Back to the east coast one more time.  I think it was 9 months before the fog cleared.  I had never lost a member of my family of origin before and I pretty much turned inward.  Reflecting, reflecting, sorting and figuring.

Then the wonder, during this period of fog, confusion and grief; a day did not pass where I forgot to  look for the wonder.  Sometimes it was the sparkle in my Dad’s eyes, the love and care of the nurses, the feel of my hand in his or that all important arm wrestle or thumb war that broke out when you thought he was on his last breath.  On the day of his funeral it was the sun-dog that appeared in an eastern sky where they are pretty much unheard of. Another day it was the eagle flying at my office window that I could have sworn was not just random, and sometimes it was as simple as an orphaned duck, a smile or a kind word.  But one thing was constant, every day that I opened my eyes and looked I was surrounded by wonders.

Now it is January 1, 2009, this year there was never a moments hesitation when deciding what I would do to make this a kinder more loving world.  On January 1, 2009 I begin the next era of Won-a-days!  I am making a promise to myself; I will spend at least a few minutes every day reflecting on my day, remembering the wonders and documenting them, even if on napkins or receipts.

For anyone returning the layout and search format has changed and will continue to change over the next few months but the concept remains the same:

Any one can participate it’s as easy as 1,2,3

1. Go to www.won-a-day.com

2. Click on comments for the most recent post

3. Enter user name, screen name or choose anonymous

4. Enter your won-a-day comment

5. Click on publish

Your comment will not be there right away, I receive an e-mail letting me know there is a comment and usually I will post it within 24hrs.

The only rule is it has to be positive & PG-Rated to get posted, you can post anonymously. It doesn’t have to be big; sometimes what seems like the most tragic day is also a day full of gifts. Here are some examples:

Today I sat quiet so my cat could sleep on my lap, even though the house was a mess.
Today a stranger shared their umbrella.

Today someone let me go ahead of them in the grocery line.

It should take no more than 1-2 minutes to participate. You can do it while the kettle is boiling, during the advertisements on your favorite show, while waiting for your turn in the shower, you get the picture, I know everyone is very busy so it’s not meant to take up your time.

The best part is when you share your won-a-day you can create a won-a-day for someone else.

Kindest thoughts always,

Bev

Your words never cease to amaze me and warm my heart, thank you. Thank you for the reminder to look for, find, see and share the wonder in each day!

  2. Thanks for helping me start my day with a reminder of the joy that can be found in the small, yet important, instances that occur — the thought of a spontaneous thumb wrestle made tears of wonder fill my eyelids, after I hit “submit comment” I’m gonna let them flow — and then enjoy the moments this day has to offer! Thanks for a wonderful blog!
